Overview
This guide explains how to add the official Coinbase Wallet browser extension to Chrome, sign in or restore an existing wallet, and adopt practical safety habits. The instructions are intentionally compact so you can keep them as notes or paste them into a presentation. Follow each step deliberately — wallet access is irreversible without your recovery phrase.
Before you begin
Prepare a secure environment: a private computer, an up-to-date Chrome browser, and a secure method to store your secret recovery phrase (preferably an offline hardware wallet or an encrypted password manager). Avoid storing your recovery phrase on cloud services or screenshots.
Install the official extension
Open the Chrome Web Store and search for "Coinbase Wallet". Verify the extension's publisher is Coinbase and confirm user counts and reviews. Avoid similarly-named impostors.
Click "Add to Chrome" then open the extensions popup (puzzle icon) and pin the wallet for quick access. Pinning prevents accidental removal and gives a predictable location for the icon.
Read the permission dialog closely. Extensions should request only essential permissions; refuse excessive access requests and reinstall from the official store if anything looks suspicious.
Restore or create a wallet
When the extension opens, you can either restore an existing wallet using your recovery phrase or create a new wallet. If restoring, type the seed phrase precisely in the original word order. Misspellings or different spacing will fail the restore process.
Account security best practices
- Backup your recovery phrase offline and test restoration on a secondary device if possible.
- Set a strong extension password and enable any available additional locks.
- Use separate wallets for large holdings and daily-use funds.
- Keep Chrome updated and remove unused extensions that could conflict or intercept data.
Connecting to dApps
Before approving any dApp connection, confirm the website URL and the exact permissions requested (signing, token approvals). Revoke unnecessary approvals in the extension or via blockchain explorers when unsure.
